Description

The study of viruses has not been applied in Astrobiology to the extent of other disciplines. This is despite viruses outnumbering all other organisms on earth by at least an order of magnitude. The role of viruses in the origin of life is hotly debated, but it is clear that they are critical for evolution of life on earth as we know it. Additionally, the role of viruses in the formation of biomarkers has barely been breached. Viruses of extremophiles are very different in terms of morphology and genome content from all other life and may offer insights into the origins of viruses and life. This session will address all aspects of virology in an astrobiological context. Submissions are expected from evolutionary biologists, geologists, chemists, and virologists as well as other astrobiologists.
