5 -- Astrobiology and the Human Exploration of Mars

Wednesday, April 16, 2008: MORNING

Joel Levine
NASA Langley Research Center
Hampton, VA, USA

James Garvin
NASA Goddard Space Flight Center
Greenbelt, MD, USA

Description

The human exploration of Mars will provide new and unique opportunities for astrobiological investigations. This session will consider the benefits and challenges of human exploration in astrobiological investigations, including humans working in synergy with robotic probes on the surface of Mars. We invite abstracts that provide an astrobiological perspective on topics such as: the role of mobility for humans and scientific instrumentation; the relative merits of in situ analysis vs. sample return to Earth; requirements for subsurface drilling; planetary protection considerations (of Mars and Earth); and the priority of sites for exploration from an astrobiological perspective. It is anticipated that this session will provide perspective on the technology needs and drivers for the human exploration of Mars in pursuit of astrobiological research objectives.
